UK CPI Micro Data For Research

Welcome

On this website, we publish a ready-to-use version for researchers of the monthly UK micro CPI data published by the ONS.  This dataset contains all prices used to construct the CPI for the UK that are publicly available. The prices are identified at the item, shop code, shop type, region, and stratum levels.

Although the ONS makes the series available each month, merging the dataset poses its own challenges. Our goal is to provide researches with the merged & cleaned dataset as well as the code to do it.

Our data & code has been the foundation for work published at the Bank of England's Bank Underground: Beyond the Average: Patterns in UK Price Data at the Micro Level by Lennart Brandt, Natalie Burr, and Krisztian Gado.

The below figure shows how a CPI measure constructed using our data tracks the official CPIH published by the ONS.

If you use our code and/or data compilation, please cite us accordingly.
